The Thursday morning Badminton group usually consists of about a dozen players, 50/50 men/women with all ability levels. Members tend to look on the morning more as an enjoyment than cut-throat playing. We have the use of four courts. After the session, most of us go for a well-earned drink in the bar, upstairs. We are always ready to welcome new members, and at a cost of one euro per person per session, it’s a good morning’s fun that won’t break the bank. Last summer, Bill Ingram started a very successful Fellowship Lunch Group for former members of CALPE 41 Club (and their friends!), who wanted to continue the camaraderie of the group. The mixed gender group has been taken into Calpe U3A and so is now open to all men and women members of U3A. They meet on the first Thursday of every month at Hotel Gran Sol for lunch, 1.00 for 1.30. Our latest day trip was to Alicante to the Albufereta area near Alicante to visit the archaeological site and the remains of the town built by Carthage and Rome (variously named Lucentum, Ákra Lueké and Lacant) with remains of the town’s forum, public baths, temples, workshops and houses. We spent an hour exploring the site which is very well maintained and explained (but not shaded, so trying to protect ourselves all the time from the sun). After visiting the site we got back into the minibus for the transfer to the museum (quite close by but too far to walk…
We are now booked with Euro Goat Trekkers for their trail described as ‘the Heidi Experience’: A 1½ hour easy forest walk accompanied by young goats and their mothers in the beautiful countryside surrounding the Jalón Valley. We will arrange transport, according to the number of people taking part. This certainly promises to be an interesting and different way of enjoying a country walk! More details on the event page.
Our latest day trip was to Novelda, a relatively undiscovered town despite it’s proximity to Alicante and only slightly over an hour’s drive from Calpe. It is particularly respected as as a gem of ‘Modernism’, the artistic movement that was developed between during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Our first stop was the emblematic Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene, situated 3 kilometres outside the town, where we were able to inspect this very unusual building inside and out and admire the panoramic views. Some even braved the climb up to the nearby Mola Castle. After a short coffee…
No post-Christmas blues for U3A Calpe travel!! First stop on Wednesday morning was the Tutankhamun Exhibition in the Bombas Gens Art and Exhibition Centre on the outskirts of Valencia: a warehouse that has been converted to house Immersive exhibitions and this was one of their most impressive, to date. After over 90 minutes travelling through ‘the Valley of the Kings’ the 16 members were transferred to Valencia. They asked for a central location with time to explore and that is what they got!!!! This was the first ‘overnighter’ of the year and the hotel, the Venecia Plaza Central was in the…

A sold out Christmas Party was held at the Gran Sol Hotel for fifty U3A Calpe members on 12 December. Dress to impress was the theme and many of the guests did just that. Good food and plenty of wine helped everyone to dance to Kenny’s Cabaret music. The evening was hailed a success and thanks to the team at Gran Sol and Kenny for all their hard work. Clive stood in as photographer on this occasion. Next week it is ladies only as JUGS celebrate Christmas at the Patio Restaurant and Men’s Dining also at The Patio.
The Sun Shone and So Did the Gold!!Wednesday, 27th November twenty- three members and guests left a sunny Calpe to arrive in a disappointingly grey Gandía. With an hour of free time, some people found local cafés, some discovered the pedestrian street of shops headed by five statues of the infamous Borja family. And then the sun came out…. Just in time for our visit to the Ducal Palace. Situated in the historic centre of Gandía, the Palace was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1964 and is one of the most famous buildings in the Region of Valencia.…
