The Sun Shone and So Did the Gold!!
Wednesday, 27th November twenty- three members and guests left a sunny Calpe to arrive in a disappointingly grey Gandía.
With an hour of free time, some people found local cafés, some discovered the pedestrian street of shops headed by five statues of the infamous Borja family. And then the sun came out…. Just in time for our visit to the Ducal Palace. Situated in the historic centre of Gandía, the Palace was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1964 and is one of the most famous buildings in the Region of Valencia. From the 14th Century it was the residence of the Royal Dukes of Gandía and was the birthplace of Francisco de Borja.
Adrian, our guide led us through the rooms, public and private, each one more opulent than the last, where the combination of sun and gold was stunning. It was a very informative tour where Adrian pointed out the variety of architectural styles, the art work, the Valencian tiling and the history of this beautiful building.
Lunch followed in a restaurant in the nearby Plaza del Ayuntamiento where friends old and new relaxed, had fun and lots of chat!
It was a most enjoyable day… there are sure to be many more…… all details of our forthcoming excursions can be found on the website: www.u3acalpe.org
