On a very sunny and memorable Sunday (it was 11th November), a group of U3a Members set off from Calpe to Los Barrios in Spain, close to the Gibraltar barrier. We were greeted onto the coach by our driver Paco.
Just before 11am Tony Stevens, a loyal British Legion Member, quoted the poem below followed by a minute’s silence. We also had a collection for the Poppy Appeal.
We finally arrived at our destination at 6.30pm. The lovely 4* Hotel Montana Plaza in Los Barrrios. After a Welcome drink in the bar we proceeded to our private dining room for dinner.
The following two days we crossed the border to Gibraltar where time was spent shopping and sightseeing. Many bargains were to be had especially cigarettes and spirits as well as perfumes and luxury goods. Most people were eager to get to Marks and Spencer’s!
The official tour of the rock by taxi drivers was fantastic. The drivers were well informed guides with lots of experience with the monkeys. The tour included a visit to the Great Siege Tunnels, St Micheal’s cave and The Sky Walk.
As well as shopping, the monkeys and sightseeing we enjoyed traditional fish and chips and other British specialities.
A fun filled trip with great people!! Thanks to everyone who participated. Also big thanks to Freda, the travel treasurer and David Stockton for the photographs.
