The Canelobre Caves – A wonder of nature

May 20

The Canelobre Caves are one of the main tourist attractions not only of Busot, but of the entire province of Alicante . Located at an altitude of 700 meters on the northern slope of the Cabeçó D’Or mountain range – one of the few Jurassic formations in the Prebetic region of the province – they are a magnificent example of a karst cave .

Inside the caves there is a space of more than 80,000 m2 that can be accessed through a 45-meter tunnel, in which water and rock have given rise to impressive shapes such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns and jellyfish , among many others.

History

This cave is located in Upper Jurassic limestone, which is 145 million years old. Although little was known about this cave until practically the 19th century, its discovery has been attributed to the Arabs , around the 10th century.

The caves were not opened to the public until after the mid-20th century . During the Spanish Civil War, they were used as an aircraft repair workshop by the Republican army, and it was at that time that the current access tunnel to the cave was drilled, as well as several platforms inside.

Cost will be 47 Euro per person.
